“All I know most surely about morality and obligation I owe to football”,
Our gracious God
So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:16Just two sentences but so much content! It starts with an invitation. We like getting invitations and this is a special invitation. This is an invitation to come to God. Elsewhere the writer to the Hebrews reminds us: “Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him” (Hebrews 11:6)
The writer reminds us too that God is gracious and merciful – two really reassuring thoughts. That gives us confidence to come boldly – not reluctantly or hesitantly but boldly. Charles Wesley’s great hymn “And can it be” includes the lines “Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own”.
I love too the promise “we will find grace to help us when we need it most”. Many of us have needed more grace in the last year than in the rest of our lives! A year of uncertainty of cancellations, of social distancing, staying home, zoom, virtual – expressions that we had not heard of a year ago. And we are still months away form normality in life and in sport.
However you are feeling today come boldly to God and receive his mercy and grace.
